Postdoctoral Research Associate (Autonomous Materials Synthesis and Manufacturing)

Purdue University — West Lafayette, IN, US
Postdoctoral Associates Contract
Start date 21 Sep 2026
Search ends Unspecified

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to help develop the next generation of autonomous and cloud laboratories for advanced materials research. This position combines materials synthesis, manufacturing, automation, AI, and advanced characterization to develop autonomous research workflows for advanced materials, with an emphasis on ceramics, refractory alloys, 2D materials, and non-equilibrium materials.

The researcher will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of researchers involved in Purdue's Intelligent Codesign Cloud Lab for Non-Equilibrium and Low-Dimensional Materials (ICoN). The position offers close collaboration with experts in AI, data science, and computational modeling of materials, and interaction with a large team of researchers across the Purdue ICoN node, led by Professor Alejandro Strachan, and other NSF Programmable Cloud Laboratory (PCL) nodes. The postdoctoral researcher will be co-advised by Professors Michael Titus, Martin Jun, and Babak Anasori.

Desired Background
Ideal candidates will have experience in several of the following areas:
• Materials synthesis or advanced manufacturing
• Laboratory automation and robotics
• Digital programming such as ROS, Unity, Isaac Sim, etc.
• High-throughput or autonomous experimentation
• AI or machine learning for scientific research
• Characterization of advanced materials
• Ceramics, refractory alloys, 2D materials synthesis, including MAX phases and MXenes.

Why Apply?
Technical Opportunity:
This position is intended for researchers who enjoy working at the intersection of materials science, automation, manufacturing, and AI, and are interested in developing new autonomous research capabilities.

Professional Development:
As with all postdoctoral researchers in my group and at Purdue, this position includes strong mentorship in scientific writing, proposal development, presentation skills, mentoring, leadership, career planning, and developing effective research and writing habits.
